3 Common Carpet Problems And Their Easy Repairs:

The perfect carpet can tie an entire room together, adding to the decor and making it luxurious. It can also be a big investment that can go up to thousands of dollars. And in the case of any damage, calling a professional to repair your carpet can put a dent in your wallet.

Here we share 3 easy repairs for common problems you may face with your carpet that allow you to fix it yourself while saving hundreds of dollars in repair costs:

Holes, Tears, and Burns:

  • In the case of a small hole, tear or burn, use a small “plug” of the carpet from an area that is hidden (such as the section leading up to the closet).
  • Examine the area where the replacement “plug” needs to be fixed.
  • Cut along the parted sections using a sharp carpet knife to create an even spot.
  • Using the cutout you have created, cut the replacement plug.
  • Position it over the hole and cut a section of strong one-sided carpet tape.
  • Ensure that half the tape covers the plug and half covers the surrounding carpet.
  • Remove the backing from the tape and slip it under the prepared hole before adding the plug on top.
  • Allow it to adhere fully over 3-4 hours.
  • Mesh the fibers with a seam roller
  • Place a heavyweight over it overnight.

Wet Carpet:

  • Remove the section of the carpet from the tack strip with pliers, till you can fold the entire wet section.
  • Run a fan to dry the carpet.
  • Clear the flooring of any water and flop the semi-wet carpet back into place.
  • Dry it fully in a flat position to ensure it retains its shape.
  • In some cases, it may be necessary to cut the padding around the wet area and patch in a new pad before attaching the carpet onto it.

Fixing a pulled-out carpet:

  • In case of a carpet that has loosened from the metal threshold, get a sharp carpet knife, a knee kicker, a new metal threshold, and 1-½-in ring-shank drywall nails.
  • First, remove the old threshold by temporarily removing the door to avoid scratches.
  • Remove the current metal threshold with a screwdriver.
  • Remove the carpeting from inside the threshold and roll the carpet back.
  • Trim the damaged part of the pulled out carpet with a sharp carpet knife.
  • Install a new threshold and attach the carpet using the knee kicker.
