Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder that is characterized by red, flaky patches on the skin.
Though there isn’t a cure, many treatments do exist to ease the symptoms of psoriasis. Here are a few ways to manage mild symptoms at home
Take supplements
Fish oil, vitamin D, Oregon grape, and evening primrose oil have all been reported to help ease mild symptoms of psoriasis. Check with your doctor before taking any supplements, to make sure they don’t interfere with other existing health conditions you may have.
Prevent dry skin
Use a humidifier in your home or office to keep the air moist, which can help prevent dry skin before it even starts. Moisturizers made specifically for sensitive skin are also great at keeping your skin supple and preventing plaques from forming.
Avoid fragrances
Most commercial soaps and perfumes have dyes and other harmful chemicals in them that may irritate your skin. While they make you smell great, they also can inflame psoriasis.
Eat healthy
Your diet may play a role in managing psoriasis. Eliminate red meat, saturated fats, carbohydrates, refined sugars, and alcohol. This may help reduce flare-ups triggered by such foods. Trying cold-water fish, nuts, seeds, and omega-3 fatty acids to manage symptoms. Olive oil may also soothe symptoms when applied topically to the skin.
Soak your body
Hot water might be an irritant for your skin. However, a lukewarm bath with Epsom salt, mineral milk, oil, or olive oil can soothe the itching and infiltrate scales and plaques. Moisturize immediately after your bath for double the benefits.
Get some sunlight
Light therapy means exposing your skin to ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light can sometimes help slow the growth of skin cells triggered by psoriasis. This therapy often requires consistent and frequent sessions. Light therapy should always be done under the professional supervision of a doctor.
Reduce stress
Chronic conditions like psoriasis can sometimes be a source of stress, which can worsen the symptoms.
Avoid alcohol & smoking
Alcohol is a trigger for a lot of people who have psoriasis. Smoking and tobacco may increase your risk of psoriasis and worsen symptoms.
Choose turmeric
Turmeric in a pill or sprinkled on your food has been found to help reduce psoriasis flare-ups.
