The ULTIMATE Sedan Buying Guide

Even as people are increasingly choosing SUVs over other car types, sedans still make a great choice. After all, they’re economical, look stylish, and fuel-efficient. What more could you want from a car? If you’re unsure of where to begin, here is a quick guide that covers everything you need to know.

Is a Sedan the Right Choice?

Sedans are great cars. They are a lot more fuel-efficient compared to SUVs and can comfortably transport four to five people. They’re also a lot lighter, which means you’ll find it easier to drive a sedan. Their low proportions and long design also make them attractive to look at – more so than most other types of cars.

Things to Check when Buying a Sedan

  • Cargo space: Don’t only check how large the cargo space of a particular sedan is, but also check the shape of the cargo area. Also, check if the cargo space is sufficient. For instance, if you are a golfer, bring your golf bag with you and see if it fits.
  • Highway driving: If the car is going to be your daily ride, make sure to take it for a test drive and check how it performs. This is also a great opportunity for you to drive it on a highway so you can check the ride quality and stability of the car.
  • Sit in the rear seat: Even if you are going to be the primary driver, check out the spaciousness and comfort of the rear seats by sitting in the seat behind the driver’s seat. You should be able to stretch your legs without feeling cramped.
  • Visibility: Although cars today have cameras, sensors, and predictive technology that will indicate if you’re about to bump into something, it’s still important to get a car with good outward visibility. So, when you are taking the car for a test drive, look out for blind spots.

Types of Sedans

Some of the popular types of sedans are sub-compact sedans, compact sedans, mid-size sedans, and full-size sedans. Sub-compact sedans are the smallest in the market and usually the most inexpensive. The downside is that these cars may not offer the best ride quality.

Compact sedans like the Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Jetta are affordable but also offer good drivability and efficiency. They also tend to have the best tech and safety features. The rear seat, however, may be slightly uncomfortable for adults.

Mid-size sedans offer great comfort and excellent tech features. If you go on long journeys often, this type of car will make a great choice. It is, however, wider than a smaller sedan so it may become challenging to drive it in tight spaces.

Full-size sedans offer tons of legroom and trunk space. They are typically more expensive but usually have impressive designs.

The type of sedan you choose should depend on how much space you need, the fuel economy you are aiming for, and the price you’re willing to pay for the car.
