Want To Buy An SUV? Here Are 5 Things You Need To Check

Looking for a more spacious ride? An SUV could be a great option for you! SUVs are available in different sizes and price points and offer buyers a number of benefits like elevated ride height, increased cargo capability, off-roading capacity, etc. Here’s what you need to consider if you are thinking of buying an SUV.

Types of SUVs

  • Sub-compact SUVs: Sub-compact SUVs have similar platforms as cars. These are a good alternative to hatchbacks and offer you the most-coveted benefits of SUVs like the elevated ride height, all-wheel drive, etc. The only downsides are that the cargo capacity and off-road capability may be limited, so they’re best for driving on city streets. These SUVs start at under $20,000.
  • Small SUVs: These SUVs are meant for people who are looking for a vehicle that can offer more space than a sedan. Small SUVs can handle the occasional muddy trail or dirt road but don’t have the best off-road capability. The cost ranges between the low-20s and mid-30s.
  • Mid-sized SUVs: These cars offer the best balance of interior space, safety, cargo room, and power. They come with two-row or three-row seating, although the third row is typically meant for kids. Be prepared to spend anywhere between $30,000 and $50,000 for a car of this size.
  • Large SUVs: These offer the most power, towing capacity, and interior space, but they can be bulky and very thirsty – so keep that in mind. They’re a good pick for drivers who need to haul trailers and heavy loads. The prices for large SUVs can go up to $80,000 or more.

Things You Need to Check when Buying an SUV

  • Seating: Most SUVs can carry a minimum of 5 people but some may even be able to carry up to 8. Consider how many people you usually travel with and look for an SUV that offers the needed seating capacity.
  • Cargo capability: Many SUVs will allow you to fold over the last row of seats to make more room for cargo. If cargo space is important for you, make sure to look for a model with this feature.
  • Safety technologies: Check if the SUV has safety tech like forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, automatic emergency braking, a lane departure warning system, etc., for a safer ride.
  • Towing: If you need to tow heavy loads, look for a truck-based SUV. You can check the tow-capacity rating to get an idea of how much load the vehicle can handle.
  • 4WD. vs. AWD: Most SUVs are available with all-wheel drive. Truck-based SUVs may have four-wheel drive. If you drive in adverse weather conditions frequently, get an SUV with all-wheel drive. If you want to buy a 4WD model, look for one that offers a full-time four-wheel-drive operation.

In addition to the above-mentioned points, make sure to compare different models to get a good deal. If the price is a concern, you could even consider buying a used SUV.
